The other day I received a prodigious meme on Twitter (memes are, you know, those images spread massively on the internet). It’s a very short video of a three or four year old Asian boy floating on his back in the water. Only the boy’s body is visible, not the surroundings, but it must be a river, because the water is muddy and opaque and, in addition, there is a current. The boy desperately clings to a white rope; the current seems to drag his little body and the poor kid howls with terror and anguish so absolute that it breaks your heart; it is clear that he believes that he does not have enough strength to hold on, that he thinks that the water is going to take him away and that he will drown. Then a twelve or thirteen-year-old teenager appears smiling, maybe her sister, who picks up the little boy, quickly gets him to his feet and then leaves. And it is that the water hardly reaches the child to mid-thigh, that is, he is not in any danger. As soon as he realizes that he is deep enough, he instantly stops crying, as if he had been unplugged. He lets go of the useless rope and scratches his ear, I would say disconcerted and a little embarrassed. Trying to understand what has happened. The video ends there.

How tremendous is fear. I mean the one that parasitizes, the one that becomes a feeling that enslaves and sickens, the overflowing terror. Because fear, as I have said many times, is a very useful defense tool. Without that biological alarm siren that prepares the body for fight or flight, we are lost. There is a rare ailment, Urbach-Wiethe, which produces the destruction of the cerebral amygdala and the complete absence of fear among those who suffer from it. Well, Urbach-Wiethe patients put their lives much more at risk than healthy people, because they are unable to recognize danger. Welcome be, then, the fear that alerts and saves.

The bad thing is that in today’s society almost no one is limited to that fear. We live perpetually immersed in a swamp of anguish, which, moreover, has become much more prodigious since the pandemic. And the real problem is not being able to turn off the alarm system. What we call stress is just that: staying to live forever in fear.

Neuroscientist Eric Kandel, Nobel Prize in Medicine, says in his book The new biology of the mind that stress causes the adrenal gland to release cortisol, a beneficial hormone for short periods of time, because it “increases attention in response to a possible threat”, but that, in excessive and continuous doses, as happens with stress, “it destroys synaptic connections between neurons in the hippocampus, the most important area of the brain for memory, as well as neurons in the prefrontal cortex, which regulates the will to live and influences decision-making and again memory.” In large doses, cortisol is toxic. A real poison.

Now I finally understand why my head is like a black hole that remembers nothing. Considering that I had panic attacks in my youth and that my average level of anxiety ranges from too much to too much, I figure I’m up to my eyeballs in cortisol. Also, I am a very imaginative person, and I have always maintained that the more imagination you have, the more fearful you are, because you can anticipate a thousand and one terrifying futures. Like that child who looked dragged out and dead. I have felt very identified with the kid from the river: how many, how many times in my life have I felt drowned in an inch of water, a set phrase that the kid’s meme has beautifully staged. The next time I have a daze I’ll try to remember (with my amnesiac head) that something as simple as standing up and opening your eyes will probably do the trick.

We would love to say thanks to the author of this post for this amazing web content

This Wednesday Panzani will have offered us a legendary performance. Joel Embiid literally unseated Orlando single-handedly. A 50/12 on 23 shots, Wilt Chamberlain is not dead ladies and gentlemen!

The little box score that goes well, it’s over here!

Chauuuud le Jojo, hot hot hot chocolate! Here are the exclusive lyrics for Chantal Goya’s next sound, probably impressed by Joel Embiid’s monstrous performance. The guy simply slammed 50 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocks in 27 f*cking minutes. Well, on the other hand the percentages are slammed… We are obviously kidding! On 23 shots (only), he put 17 this barjo, a word that will soon be written barjojo. We knew that the Cameroonian and his Sixers were in pretty good shape at the moment, 9 wins out of the last 11 games with an Embiid in 32/10/4, but here we are on a different type of performance since the gentleman simply matched his career-high. This evening, it was Father Joel with the distribution of baskets and footwork Olajuwonesque to admire without moderation. On the other hand, for our Floridian friends, it was the bogeyman opposite. Obviously not wise enough this year, the Orlando players have seen a big guy not let them have fun until the end since the pivot decided to kill all suspense in the 3rd quarter. You’re there, you lead by 10 points at the break, you’re good in it and there’s the other bugger who decides to fuck you 20 pawns in the quarter for a 47-23 over 12 minutes. Joel plants a big 3 to reach 47 points, the crowd rises, the guy flexes a little and goes to sit down since the game is over. The evening could have ended there, but it would have been a shame. He comes back two short minutes to score three points on the line and complete his best career game, with the bonus of the fastest 50/10 in history. MONS-TRU-THEY!

Despite this card, the evening could have turned out badly on the Philly side sincein the first half, the best pivot on the ground was named Mo Bamba. The giant notably offered a heat stroke to which no one was ready. His stats when he returned to the locker room? 28 points at 10/13 to shoot including 7/8 behind the arc! Seeing the colossus shoot like Steph Curry is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. He too had his best game of his career tonight with his 32 points. We witnessed a mind-blowing duel between the two pivots for 24 minutes before the Sixer set the record straight. The logic is finally respected!

Plus Wednesday Panzani as match you die. On the one hand we have a Joel Embiid who put Philadelphia on his back, on the other Mo Bamba who does Dirk Nowitzki… In short, it was nimp’ but we saw a completely legendary Cameroonian and that, that doesn’t has no price.

Like something out of a science fiction movie, this week news about the development of a artificial moon, manufactured by the Chinese government.

The news was replicated in all the world’s media, but most readers did not fully understand the reason behind this innovation.

Below we tell you the details of this peculiar scientific development, which could help space exploration and revolutionize it in more than one way.

The Chinese artificial moon

When it was announced that China had developed a “artificial moon“Some unsuspecting people thought that it was a kind of spacecraft that would replicate the appearance of our satellite.

While Chinese technology isn’t exactly that, it’s more impressive than you might think.

In reality, it is a scientific research facility, within its walls the last details are being given to a kind of small simulator that can replicate the physical and climatic conditions of the Moon.

That is to say, it is a small device conditioned to simulate the conditions of the Moon. Although it sounds less impressive than a “False Moon”, it is more important than you think.

First, developing the technology that simulates the lunar low-gravity environment is not easy.

To achieve this, Chinese scientists developed magnetic field technology, under the same principles that 25 years ago had allowed levitate a frog in the UK.

In the 1997 experiment, magnets were used to balance the frog’s gravity, allowing it to levitate with a stable balance.

Getting to do the same with a small laboratory is not easy, and it required a lot of effort, technology and money.

diamagnetic levitation

The technology that will allow this Chinese innovation to work was developed in 1997 by the British scientist André Geim, in the aforementioned floating frog experiment.

At the time, because of the curious thing about levitating a frog, Geim won the I.G. Nobel of that year, the prizes that are given to the most ridiculous inventions.

Geim’s frog levitation was made possible by the principles of diamagnetic levitation.

It is a type of levitation that is achieved by applying an external magnetic field to the atoms of an object.

With this, the electrons modify their movement, producing their own magnetic field to oppose the external one.

Normally it is achieved with the help of magnets, which have to be strong enough so that the magnetic force of repulsion between it and the field of atoms “overcomes” gravity and allows the object to levitate.

Interestingly, for his studies on graphene, Gim won the award Physics Nobel -now the real one- in 2010.

So that?

In accordance with local media, the Chinese artificial Moon will levitate this year in Xuzhou, in the province of Jiangsu.

Thanks to its technology based on magnetism, it will be possible to replicate the conditions of the Moon in a 60 cm vacuum chamber.

If all goes well, the camera will be able to float indefinitely, allowing it to be filled with rocks and dust to mimic the lunar surface.

Now, what is this for? artificial moon? China plans to launch a manned mission to the Moon, including building a permanent base on our satellite.

This ambitious plan needs, to be achieved, a lot of technology that is currently being developed, and Chinese specialists think that it is better to test their technology before launching their missions.

That is, the artificial moon It will serve to test the technology that Chinese scientists are developing, in low gravity environments practically equal to that of the Moon.

Specialists will be able to see first-hand how materials deform in the conditions of the Moon, as well as their resistance time.

The idea is to take advantage of this Moon false to avoid problems, and to be able to test the technology that is currently under development without too much expense and with much greater control.

“Dad or Mom is going on a business trip”. It’s not the remake inclusive version of the 1985 Palme d’Or (as we know Kusturica, he would never have accepted), it’s the name of a box intended for children whose parents travel frequently for professional reasons.

Initially, the box was designed for the offspring of soldiers. It must be said that three of the women who are at the origin of this beautiful idea are in a relationship with soldiers, when they are not daughters of thugs! They have upgraded their product by adapting it to trips whose purpose is less belligerent, although: business travel.

This beautiful idea, therefore, consists in making the absence of a parent live better, even in transcending it. By materializing it in time: a “Velleda” schedule makes it possible to count down the days (and especially the nights, by virtue of the childish markers, the specialists tell us) of the absence. By transforming it into a support for the imagination: accessories make it possible, for example, to invent the city in which the traveling parent is. By encouraging communication at a distance or on return, using different media. Non-exhaustive description because the box is very rich.

Miaougui promises a product suitable for 4-12 year olds. From stickers that can be peeled off at will, accessible to the little ones, to writing materials suitable for primary school pupils, the box can effectively rake in a wide range. But one homemade testing gave this result: the 12-year-old boy muttered a rumbling sound that we could translate as follows: “Yes, well, it’s more for my sister“. As for the sister in question, 9 years old, she, for her part, officially declared: “It’s seriously good!” (even though neither parent was on a professional trip: the father, in particular, wrote the article you are reading alongside him).

A CSR tool

A parent employee, he is 100% employee and 100% parent“. This is Marie de Bucy, a stakeholder in the Miaougui adventure, who speaks. A formula that sums up the company’s objective well: “We are in the midst of CSR. Moreover, if the box is accessible on an individual basis (for around forty euros, on the Maiougui site, ndr), our interlocutors are HRDs or CSR directors since this function is developing“.

Sell to companies, therefore, so that they offer the article to parent collaborators who travel. For Miaougui, the working capital is already substantial: the original box is sold to 30,000 copies to the Armies each year. And the excellent idea is not only educational: by keeping total control of the product, Maiougui can personalize the box (in the colors of the buying company, for example), but also its content (the parent can become monthly depending on the duration of his travels).

DeplacementsPros has always refused to become a “consumer page” as journalists say, but here, the idea is too good to be ignored. “You’re right, it’s hilarious“, has just added the tester quoted above.

We would love to give thanks to the writer of this article for this remarkable material

There are formulas that never fail and are destined for success. But, in order not to waste characters on multiple examples, one of the biggest ones should be highlighted: the boy bands Although the characteristics vary according to the fashions of the decade, in essence they are always the same, and some were considered the greatest bands in history. In the case of NSYNC, who was an icon of the nineties, only one member went on to be remembered by pop culture and the rest vanished as if they had never been.

The boy bands were born in the ’40s from the hand of the male quartets that performed doo-wop songs in unison and became official with the resounding arrival of the Beatles in the ’60s.

The renowned rock band from Liverpool, despite the pain of musical snobs, is for many experts the mother of boy bands. Then came the ’70s, defined by The Jackson Five Y, Thus, we arrive at the relevant decade for this article: the ’90s and the acclaimed pop boom.

Upbeat music, futuristic outfits and choreographies that everyone knew by dint of practice and repetition, were the elements that defined these musical ensembles. At the head came the boys from NSYNC, whose songs earned the position of the most listened to year after year. His hits are remembered to this day and, very surely, if “Bye, Bye, Bye” and “Everybody” are played at a party, most of those present can sing even if it is the chorus.

The boy band, contrary to what many believe, was not formed solely by Justin Timberlake. Next to him were JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick and Lance Bass. The five of them worked side by side for seven years, which were -perhaps- the most successful of their lives. They were nominated for eight Grammys, they worked with legendary names in music such as Elton John and the album they released broke sales records.

NSYNC was an icon of the boy bands of the '90s.
NSYNC was an icon of the boy bands of the ’90s.

It was 2001, their faces covered the rooms of thousands of teenagers and appeared on every magazine cover. With everything going for you, premiered celebrity, which would be -unbeknownst to them- their last album. Once again, they sold millions of copies in just one week and their songs were playing on every radio station. At that point, the production company announced that they would go on hiatus to promote Justin Timberlake’s solo work. But the supposed vacations were extended until culminating in the end of the band.

Timberlake, supported by the label, continued among the most acclaimed celebrities and went from music to acting without a problem. He got involved with outstanding artists, participated in multiple film productions and added a couple more awards to his already full shelf. This time, the statuettes only had his name engraved. Over the years, he married Jessica Biel and had two beautiful children. Although he made it clear on several occasions that he was not against a meeting of NSYNC, he was never too willing.

Lance Bass he set out to prepare himself as an astronaut so that he could travel to the moon. He trained, studied, got NASA certifications, and did everything to join a Russian mission that would send him into space in 2002. Sadly, he hit an obstacle that he could not overcome: he had to pay an amount of 20 million dollars and he could not get the money.

With the frustrated space dream, he tried to resume his artistic career. He appeared in multiple reality shows, went through some Broadway stages and lent his voice to various cartoon characters. Finally, she focused on domestic life and activism to defend the rights of the LGBTIQ+ community. She married and, together with her husband, became parents in November 2021.

Bass wasn’t the only one struggling to keep his art career alive. Chris Kirkpatrick created several bands after NSYNC in an attempt to express his vocation as a boy band member but he did not have much luck. After several failures, he disappeared only to return in a series of reality shows that sought to revive celebrities from the past. Once his brief and unhappy stint on television was over, he decided that his thing was social networks and, to this day, he organizes game nights on his Instagram account.

For Kirkpatrick the end of the band that brought him to fame was, perhaps, harder than for the rest. In dialogue with Huffington Post assured that “he was not ready for it to end” and that he was lost once he realized that they would never step on stage together again.

Joey Fatone I agreed with him and assured that, despite being happy about Timberlake’s triumph, it seemed strange to him that the record company never made it clear that the plan was to dissolve NSYNC. Once it happened, and seeing that there was no turning back, he tried his luck at the movies. After his debut with my big greek wedding, he opted for the Broadway stage and found his niche hosting game shows.

Last but not least, it is JC Chasez. Shy and reclusive, he was never very fond of the herds of fans and paparazzi that followed him wherever he went. Perhaps, of all the members of the musical ensemble, he was the one who was most happy that the maelstrom had ended. He spent a couple of years writing songs for other artists, but finally chose to disappear from the public scene and is rarely seen.

Even if NSYNC ended amid miscommunications and conflicts caused by the pursuit of individual interests, no hard feelings remained between the musicians. The Mapuche activist, academic, linguist and politician Elisa Loncon, former president of the Constitutional Convention in charge of drafting a new Magna Carta in Chile, received this Wednesday the René Cassin Award for Human Rights, an act in which she highlighted that Chile is currently experiencing a “new history” with the drafting of a Constitution written with “parity” by those who had been absent from the “sphere of power.”

The award ceremony, which is granted by the Government of Lakua and which recognizes Loncon’s work with indigenous communities, was held in Gasteiz.

During the award ceremony, chaired by the Lehendakari of the CAV, Iñigo Urkullu, a poem was read in Mapudungun, the language of the Mapuche people, which moved Elisa Loncon.

The activist, in her speech, related that her ancestors fought against colonialism and the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet and said that all her grandparents had a common dream, that of recovering “the usurped territory”, the sovereignty and culture of their town. “That is the fight that I embrace and that inspires me,” he remarked.

He stressed that a constitutional process has begun in Chile to change the Constitution left by the dictatorship and that legitimized “a segregating and undemocratic social and political model based on a neoliberal model” that today the people of the country intend to overcome.

The text is being written “with parity” and with a decentralizing vision that respects multinationality.

He has also made a defense of the recovery of Mapudungun and has denounced that when maneuvering against a language those affected are condemned “to the world of silence” and threaten dignity and humanity because languages are instruments for “communication, dialogue and peace among peoples.

One of the most influential

Elisa Loncon, who was born in 1963 in the commune of Traiguén, in Mapuche territory under Chilean administration, has been distinguished by the ‘Financial Times’ a few days ago as one of the 25 most influential women in the world.

She taught herself to read, graduated as an English teacher from the Universidad de La Frontera, in La Araucanía, and did postgraduate studies at the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague and the University of Regina in Canada.

Until recently, he chaired the Constitutional Convention of Chile, a body created to draft the new draft of the country’s Constitution.

He has worked especially so that the linguistic and cultural differences of the Mapuche people and the original peoples of the Chilean State are recognized.

Human rights at risk

In the act, Urkullu pointed out that democracy is much more than a political regime. “It is a system of values”, and has defended dialogue, non-violence and non-imposition, as well as diversity and social justice and the political recognition of all identities, nations and peoples.

The Minister of Equality, Justice and Social Policies of Lakua, Beatriz Artolazabal, has warned that today human rights in the world suffer a situation “of risk and threat” due to the “rise of fundamentalism and populism, international terrorism, racism and xenophobia, forced displacement and humanitarian crises or climate change”.

Rene Cassin

The René Cassin Award was created in 2003 and publicly recognizes people and entities that stand out in the defense of human rights.

The award was named after René Cassin, who is considered one of the main inspirers of the Declaration of Human Rights and who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1968.

The situation of Tunisian public companies is serious and reforms must be initiated as soon as possible to save them in view of their capital importance for the country’s economy, often being in a position of dominance and often having a monopoly.

Since March 2021, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had alerted the Tunisian authorities. As part of a mission, the IMF revealed that a large part of these companies operate at a loss and require regular transfers and injections of funds, which represents 7 to 8% of annual GDP. These companies are also heavily indebted, the experts of the mission having estimated the debt at 40% of GDP. One report annexed to the 2022 Finance Law on public establishments illustrates this fact.

For this report, a sample of fifty companies was chosen. Among them, the social funds whose situation remains chaotic, even if at first glance one has the impression that the situation of the National Pension and Social Security Fund (CNRPS) is better than that of the National Social Security Fund ( CNSS). Ditto for the National Health Insurance Fund (Cnam).

In fact, the CNSS deficit goes from 530 million dinars in 2018 to 1.07 billion dinars in 2020, with state aid and solidarity social participation of 40 million dinars (MD). Its debt went from 1.71 billion dinars to 3.36 billion dinars for this period.

For its part, the deficit of the CNRPS goes from 787.4 MD in 2018 to 190.8 MD in 2020, with state aid and solidarity social participation evolving from 200 MD to 460 MD. Debt goes from 2.69 billion dinars to 3.56 billion dinars for this same period.

The Cnam, for its part, posted a profit increasing from 574.1 MD in 2018 to 704 MD in 2020, with state aid and solidarity social participation evolving from 8.7 MD to 6.8 MD. On the other hand, the debt climbed from 1.81 billion dinars to 2.44 billion dinars.

Another aberration and while the State holds the monopoly in the country, the National Tobacco and Matches Board (RNTA) and the Kairouan Tobacco Factory are barely afloat with substantial debt. They achieved a result of 6.9 MD and 1.4 MD respectively in 2020 against a deficit of 49.5 MD and 47.8 MD in 2018. Debt reached 645.7 MD and 217.5 MD respectively. MD in 2020 against 535.76 MD and 271.8 MD in 2018.

The cumulative deficit carried over from the RNTA went from 298.2 MD in 2018 to 403 MD in 2020. That of the Manufacture des tabacs de Kairouan went from 175 MD in 2018 to 260.8 MD in 2020.

The situation of transport companies is far from better, especially with the pandemic and its repercussions.

For Tunisair, the deficit went from 225.8 MD in 2018 to 336.7 MD in 2020. The cumulative deficit carried over increases from 927 MD to 1.28 billion dinars for a debt that goes from 1.95 billion dinars to 2.14 billion dinars.

The Tunisian Navigation Company (CTN) records a deficit of 224.6 MD in 2020 against a profit of 45.3 MD in 2018. The debt goes from 380.1 MD to 497 MD for this period.

For the Tunis Transport Company (Transtu), the deficit increases from 192.4 MD in 2018 to 218.8 MD in 2020 with a cumulative deficit carried forward of 1.23 billion dinars for 2018. Debt goes from 981 MD to 1.31 billion dinars, this same period.

The Tunisian National Railway Company (SNCFT) recorded a deficit of 103.6 MD in 2020 against 91.1 MD in 2018. Its cumulative deficit carried forward increased from 577.4 MD in 2018 to 788.3 MD. MD in 2020. Its debt goes from 1.21 billion dinars for 2018 to 1.48 billion dinars for 2019 (the figures for 2020 have not been communicated, note).

1642619415 950 In figures the catastrophic governance of public companies

In this report, we discover that the indebtedness of public institutions to the State increased by 17.4% between 2018 and 2019 and 8.2% between 2019 and 2020, reaching 6.52 billion dinars in 2020.

This increase is mainly due and according to the report to three public companies in particular and which represent 71% of the increase recorded between 2019 and 2020: CNRPS with 179.9 MD, Transtu with 107 MD and Tunisair with 63.9 MD.

Despite this chaotic situation, some of these companies represent a godsend for the State in terms of imports, taxes and royalties, in addition to those which contribute to the public treasury through their profits.

We learn that public companies participated in the coffers of the State with dividends of 230 MD in 2019 against 333 MD in 2018. For 2020 and until the end of November, these companies paid the State 25 MD, noting that ‘there is a certain delay in the finalization of the financial statements of certain companies.

The report lists the companies that have contributed the most to the state coffers. The palme d’or thus goes in 2020 to the RNTA with more than one billion dinars, followed by the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (Steg) with 846.9 MD, the National Petroleum Distribution Company ( SNDP-Agil) with 469.9 MD, the Tunisian Petroleum Activities Company (Etap) with 403.2 MD and Tunisie Telecom (TT) closing this Top 5 with contributions of around 395.9 MD.

Other public enterprises required state intervention. Thus, we learn that the Cereals Office received in 2020 about 1.74 billion dinars, the Tunisian company of refining industries (Stir) 594 MD, the CNRPS 460 MD, the National Oil Office 315, 14 MD and the Fund for loans and support of local authorities 300.5 MD.

The report admits that the situation of these companies can have a negative impact on public finances, in particular because of the drop in income received by the State but also because of the need for the State to intervene to bail out some of them.

In addition, the report points to the level of indebtedness of these companies and their ability to repay as a threat to the state budget. Thus, the unpaid debts of these companies increased by 18% between 2019 and 2020, reaching 957 MD. Among them, we can cite the National Society of Cellulose and Alfa paper which did not reimburse 250 MD, Transtu 244 MD, STEG 99 MD, the Tunisian steel company El Fouladh 60 MD and the National Office of Sanitation 58 MD.

Loans granted by the State to public enterprises increased by 30% in 2020, reaching 2.33 billion dinars.

The report also reveals that for the period 2018-2020, some public companies had difficulty repaying external loans and the State had to intervene to fulfill this obligation in their place, in particular the National Operating and Distribution Company. des eaux (Sonede), Tunisie Autoroute and Tunisair.

He cites some companies that represent a high risk to public finances: the Cereals Office, the Central Pharmacy, Steg, Stir and Tunisair.

The economic situation cannot recover without finding a radical solution to the haemorrhage represented by public enterprises. Their restructuring will represent a big step towards the consolidation of Tunisian public finances and will help to relaunch the national economy on a good basis for sustainable growth.

There are God’s hand by the Italian Paolo Sorrentino who won the Oscar for best foreign film in 2014 with The Big Bellezza. And The Power of the Dog New Zealander Jane Campion who won the first female Palme d’Or in 1993 at Cannes with The Piano Lesson. Suffice to say that we are going to jostle on the Lido island in Venice to discover these two new releases exclusively broadcast on Netflix – God’s hand will be released on the platform on December 15, The Power of the Dog at a date still unknown. Selecting Netflix-stamped films is not a first at the Mostra and rewarding them does not scare it: the festival notably awarded its Golden Lion to Rome by the Mexican Alfonso Cuarón from 2018. For its part, Netflix is taking the opportunity to gain credibility and subscribers. Despite the – still – closed doors of the Cannes Film Festival, the American leader in streaming continues inexorably to place its pawns on the great chessboard of world cinema. confirm with Nasturtium Cousin, author of Netflix & Cie, behind the scenes of a revolution (Armand Colin, 2018).

With two of its films in competition at the Mostra, can we say that Netflix is in the process of bending the major international film festivals a little more?

Probably. In any case, it is certain that, one after the other, the main film festivals in the world are softening their position in relation to that of Netflix. While Netflix has not changed its position for years! Reed Hastings, the co-founder of Netflix, has always said that the platform’s original productions were intended to be offered exclusively to its subscribers who pay their subscription. From then on, they eventually agreed to broadcast certain films in very homeopathic doses in a few cinemas on an event basis. But for him, there was never any question of Netflix original productions being accessible to everyone in theaters under normal conditions.

As for La Mostra de Venise, it has been trying for several years to position itself in this kind of world war of film festivals and we notice that little by little it is imposing itself as the “antechamber” of the Oscars – the last year, the film that won the Golden Lion, nomadland, was then awarded several Oscar prizes. And it’s true that the festival manages to attract great films, great Netflix productions and therefore to impose itself in this great world tour of film festivals.

Like the Oscars by the way, which initially had a very inflexible position with regard to Netflix original productions. We remember that a few years ago, Steven Spielberg himself said that there was no question of Netflix productions being in official competition for the Oscars if they were not released in theaters under normal conditions. Strangely, Steven Spielberg himself softened his stance on this this spring and is starting to work with Netflix himself…

So would you say that Netflix is now clearly serving as a lever for an international film festival?

Yes, and I also think that the pandemic and the new situation that the pandemic has brought has really accelerated this position for Netflix which has at least 200 million subscribers worldwide. And then, it is true that for the past year, almost everywhere in the world, movie theaters have been closed for several months in a row, which, as we know, has forced certain movie studios to review their strategy, in particular the Warner and Disney studios which, since the beginning of the year, have released some of their films (at least for the American market) simultaneously on their own platform and in theaters. Already there is that. And then Netflix, and this had also impressed many observers, announced at the beginning of the year a hundred original productions of films which would be released directly on the platform, including that of Jane Campion.

Besides, seeing Jane Campion’s latest film broadcast exclusively on Netflix is huge, isn’t it?

Oh yes, really amazing!

The Power of the Dog is one of the most awaited films by cinema observers, everyone remembers its Palme d’Or of 93 and there, that it comes out on Netflix… everyone wonders “did it have gave in or couldn’t she do otherwise if she wanted her film to wrap up and be released in theaters?

Has Netflix definitely won its acclaim?

Definitely, no, I don’t think so. Especially since the position of the Cannes Film Festival may change. It turns out that the two Netflix films at the Mostra, these two highly anticipated films, could have been in Cannes this year, that’s what is really disturbing. Thierry Frémaux, general delegate of the Cannes Film Festival, had specified in an interview with Variety shortly before the fortnight, that he had sought to have them but that it had not been possible because Netflix and the organizers of the festival had remained, this year again, in their respective positions. Namely: Netflix wanted its films to participate in the Cannes Film Festival provided that it was in official competition, so that they could compete for a prize, while the festival believed that Netflix could only appear out of competition if his films were not released theatrically under normal conditions. Several analysts, in particular Le Figaro, considered that it was a false hand extended to Netflix, a jump seat

There are two opposing strategies between the Mostra and Cannes like two sailboats choosing completely different options in a regatta. In this race, is the Cannes Film Festival taking the risk of being behind?

I don’t think so because this year again Cannes made itself heard. His prize list did not leave anyone indifferent in the world of cinema, with this surprising and very daring Palme d’Or of Titanium by Julia Ducournau which is a really radical film.

I don’t think the Cannes Film Festival is the loser. Especially since we must not forget that from a business point of view, the Cannes film market was still held this year and it went very well, there were a lot of purchases, sales of projects and films, so Cannes continues to hold first place in the cinema business.

So, I don’t think the dice are cast at all and we don’t know if the festival organizers will stick to their position or change it next year if it ever becomes too untenable compared to the others.

Behind all this, what is the ultimate goal of Netflix?

What is certain is that Netflix still wants to gain respectability. If they win prizes at the various film festivals, it is to show that he too buys and produces real quality films.

But we never heard Reed Hastings say that he was a cinephile, that he admired French auteur cinema, even though the platform offers films by François Truffaut, for example. The objective is always the same: it remains a business and its objective remains to offer the most diverse films possible to attract subscribers.

All the more so in a battle that is getting tougher and tougher with tougher and tougher competitors like Disney and the others that are developing all over the world.

We wish to say thanks to the writer of this short article for this amazing web content
